Beyond the Bedspread

Years ago a fashionable bedroom in a fancy hotel or an elegant home always featured a handsome bedspread, smooth and neat as a pin with pillows tucked carefully out of sight. Today a bedspread is almost considered quaint or vintage, and indeed some people even collect vintage chenille and matelasse bedspreads. Modern bedding takes the pillows out from under wraps and puts them center stage as the focal point of the bed.

Modern bedding fashions and collections typically consist of a quilt or comforter, a bed skirt and two pillow shams. In the past it was common for everything in the bedroom to match such as bedspreads and drapes or nightstand table rounds; modern bedding almost never matches but instead coordinates. By coordinating, a common color may be repeated on each article or it may be a print such as a checkerboard motif which appears on each item; sometimes there is no common color, print or pattern but the pieces all complement one another in some way. That’s why it’s often helpful to simply invest in a bedding ensemble when you seek to update a bedroom – you don't need to be a decorator or enlist the help of a professional when all the design work has been done for you.

Another way to quickly update the look of a bedroom without starting all over is to invest in some pillows or throws – just toss a few at the head of the bed to create a whole new look.
